WOWK High School Football 2025: Week 9

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) – High school football is going into its ninth week of the 2025 season with games happening all over Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia Friday night.

Starting in West Virginia, it’s the game of the week, the 6-1 George Washington Patriots hosting the 5-1 top-ranked Huntington Highlanders. Huntington gets the ball to the goal line on their opening drive, but Tayveon Wilson’s pass intended for Andreas Reese is knocked away by Jermare Smith. Highlanders would settle for a field goal. Huntington would get their offense going in the second half and win this one 30-10.

Heading down to Mingo County, both the Miners and the Logan Wildcats trying to keep an undefeated season alive. First drive for the Mingo Central Miners, Jamere Knuckles with his team on the goal line takes it in himself for a QB sneak touchdown. Defense was humming early in this one, but the offense came alive in the second half. Mingo Central takes down Logan, 48-27.

Out in Wayne County, Spring Valley Timberwolves looking to bounce back at home against the Capital Cougars. It’s 1st and goal at the 9 when the ball is handed-off to Spring Valley’s Miguel Cain, who runs into the endzone for a touchdown, bringing Spring Valley up to 14-6. Spring Valley gets back on track with a 28-6 win at home over Capital.

The Hurricane Redskins hope to get back on track against the Oak Hill Red Devils. Oak Hill is going to kick it to Zach Turner, who makes some guys miss and uses his speed to get down field. He will eventually be brought down at the 15. Hurricane will get a field goal out of it to lead the game, 3-0. Hurricane falls in this one on the road against Oak Hill, 28-16.

Two teams going in the right direction with the South Charleston Black Eagles against the Riverside Warriors at home. South Charleston QB Ceno Riley is going to target Devin Lazo and be picked off by Auric Booker and no body is going to be able to catch him as he goes all the way to the house for a pick six. Riverside beats South Charleston for their second win of the season, 31-14.

Now down at Pioneer Field at Wayne High School, the Pioneers looking to take down undefeated Chapmanville. It’s play five, Chapmanville 1st and goal at the 3, when QB Dakota Dalton hands the ball to Preston Kovach, who runs for a touchdown and takes the score to 7-0. Chapmanville stays unbeaten with a 44-7 win over Wayne.

Up on the river, the Herbert Hoover Huskies look to win their sixth straight game taking on Ripley. First drive of the game, Ripley QB Jackson Moore passes to Kyler Fisher, and that ball is going to be ripped out by Shannon Mitchell and dived on by Aiden Hernandez for Hoover. On the next drive, Husky QB Peyton Grigsby hands the ball off to Blake Fisher, who finds the hole and heads into the endzone. Hoover takes the Cardinal Conference Crown as they down Ripley, 62-14.

Down in Shady Spring, the Tigers were playing host to the Winfield Generals. First drive, Shady Springs’ Evan Romage gets the handoff with a big hole from the linemen, but the ball is punched out by Carson Samples and recovered by Aiden Tate. Winfield with it now as Gannon Boggs takes it into the endzone for a touchdown. The generals would pull away as they take down Shady Spring on the road, 39-13.

The Sissonville Indians were back home at Joe Sawyers Field looking for a win against Wyoming East. The Warriors moving the ball down the field thanks to Senior Braxton Morgan, getting the first score of the evening, but it will be their only score. Sissonville gets their third win of the season, taking down Wyoming East 43-7.

  • Riverside at South Charleston

Now in Kentucky, the Johnson Central Golden Eagles heading up to Musketeer Stadium to take on the Greenup County Musketeers. The Musketeers are on the goal line when they try to punch it in, but Central’s defense makes the stop. Greenup tries again as QB Jasper Davis scans for an open receiver before rolling out, finding an opening and taking it to the endzone himself. Johnson Central runs away with this one, taking the win 48-14.

Finishing in Ohio, the Ironton Fighting Tigers make the trip to Gallipolis to battle the Blue Devils from Gallia Academy. First play of the game for the Tigers, it’s a read option that goes to Zayne Williams. He’s making Devils miss and hits a mean stiff arm, making sure they won’t touch him until it’s too late. Tigers take an early lead, and they hold on to it. Ironton wins this one over Gallia, 56-7.
