Police in Worcester said they have found the body of Karen Solomon, who was wanted in connection to the death of her husband, Kurt Solomon, a longtime city officer.
Speaking to the media Monday afternoon, Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier said two employees at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital called police to report they’d found a body in the woods near the May Street facility. Responding officers also discovered a handgun near her body, he said.
The announcement comes after a weeklong dragnet that started when Worcester police found Kurt Solomon dead in his own home on Tuesday. Almost immediately, the department asked for the public’s help in locating Karen Solomon, warning that she may be armed.
Police had previously released a video of Karen Solomon taken about a half-mile from where her body was later found.
By Saturday, police had issued a warrant for her arrest, charging her with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
“We believe this case is a tragic murder-suicide that occurred, and we still have plenty of work to do as far as wrapping up all the pieces to this,” Saucier said.
Saucier also read a statement from the Solomon family, which thanked several federal, state and local law enforcement agencies for their help as they process what happened.
“The nightmare of the past week has left our family heartbroken and rudderless,” Saucier read.
The family also thanked everyone who has offered prayers and sympathies, saying they “helped us through each minute of the day.”
The Office of the Medical Examiner will make the final identification of the body, and time and manner of death, according to Saucier. The handgun found at the scene was not a police service weapon, he said. Investigators have not yet determined who owned the gun.
Karen Solomon had written two books on mental health for law enforcement families.
Kurt Solomon was a military veteran who served for more than three decades as a police officer. A wake is scheduled for Tuesday at Our Lady of the Angels Church, with the funeral held Wednesday.
