Windsor beats Torrington in season opener in first game for new head coach

WINDSOR – Windsor won its first game under new head coach Quinn Fleeting, son of former coach Rob Fleeting, 28-13 over Torrington Friday night at Windsor.

It wasn’t an easy win for Windsor, the Class MM runner-up last year. The Warriors lost a lot of experience on their offensive line, along with top running back John Manning and receiver Cashmire Lewis, to graduation.

But senior quarterback AJ Robinson is back and he had plenty of targets and the Windsor defense locked down in the second half to stop Torrington.

“It’s always great to come out with a first home win,” said Robinson, who had two touchdown passes and ran for a touchdown in the second quarter. “We got some little things to pick up but we’re going to come together as a team and watch film and make sure everything goes smoothly from here on out.”

Both Windsor and Torrington were playoff teams last year, with the Warriors advancing to the Class MM championship, where they lost a heartbreaker to Masuk on a last-second field goal. Torrington lost to Masuk in the quarterfinals.

Quinn Fleeting, who played for Windsor and was an assistant, took over for his father after Rob became an assistant principal at the high school and had to step down from his coaching position.

On Friday, Torrington scored first on an 11-yard pass from Aiden Hansen to Evan Roman at the end of the first quarter. Less than a minute into the second quarter, Robinson had a 25-yard TD pass to Charlie Lewis but the conversion failed and Windsor trailed 7-6.

Windsor’s defense stopped Torrington on the next series and went down the field to score on a Robinson 1-yard keeper. The conversion pass failed, and the Warriors led 12-7.

Torrington had two big runs – the first was a 75-yarder by Cam Roxbury to put Torrington on the Warrior 20. Jayden Compton tracked him down for Windsor and stopped him before he hit the end zone, but the Raiders scored two plays later and went up 13-12 with 4:34 left in the half.

Roxbury had another big run for 49 yards on Torrington’s next series but Windsor’s defense stopped the Raiders.

With 41 seconds left in the half, Windsor started a drive from its 8-yard line. A 57-yard pass from Robinson set up a 12-yard touchdown pass to Missoni Brown with 15 seconds left. Windsor went up 20-13 on a Robinson conversion pass to Christian Acosta.

Windsor got another touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter when Mark Henderson scored on a two-yard run and the conversion was good to put the Warriors up 28-13.
