What's the difference between a flood and a flash flood?

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — We’ve been talking about a lot of rain lately. Meteorologist Adam Rutt explains the difference between some recent warnings.

With recent heavy rain in portions of KELOLAND, we’ve been bringing up flooding concerns on a more regular basis. Some of these terms may sound similar at times, so let’s go through the differences between them.

First, we’ll talk about two very similar-sounding advisories: Flood warnings vs Areal flood warnings. A flood warning is issued when rivers or creeks are forecast to reach flood stage, and it’s typically reserved for major waterways. Areal flood warnings, however, are typically issued regarding secondary creeks and waterways. They can also be issued for areas already inundated with prior heavy rainfall or areas prone to overflow.

While flood and areal flood headlines are typically used for long-duration flooding events, flash flood headlines are short-term in nature. They’re issued when heavy rain is in the forecast, but other details can be taken into consideration such as urban/rural setting and how much moisture is or is not already present in the soil. Flash flood warnings are usually issued within three hours of heavy rain beginning and remain in place for two to four hours…though longer warnings are certainly possible depending on the situation.

Regardless of which headline is used, flooding can pose serious threats to one’s property as well as oneself. It’s always important to keep an ear open for updates on potentials of this nature, and remember: If you come across a flooded road, don’t chance it. Turn around, don’t drown.
