Westford’s Maddie Smith wins New England golf title

The trophy case in the Smith household is in danger of breaking due to the weight of all the trophies and plaques.

Westford Academy senior Maddie Smith added to her list of accomplishments by capturing the New England Interscholastic girls golf championship in runaway fashion.

Despite playing the top players from the six-state region, Smith dominated the field by carding a 4-under 67 at the Mohegan Sun Golf Club in Baltic, Conn.

The Memphis University-bound star won the tournament by six shots. The runner-up, Bishop Brady’s Madelyn Savary, finished with a 73.

Smith is the younger sister of Morgan and Molly Smith, two of the top players in New England. Morgan Smith plays at the University of Georgia, while Molly Smith tees it up at the University of Central Florida. They also starred at Westford Academy.

Sam Pieczynski of Tantasqua won the MIAA Division 2 state championship with a 72 (+1) at Taconic Golf Club.

Foxboro’s Zac Georgantas and Wayland’s Cooper Stowell finished tied for second with 73’s (+2). Canton won the team tournament with a cumulative score of 324 (+40), while Nauset and Masconomet finished tied second with 327’s (+43).
