Waymo’s Las Vegas robotaxi service has been given the green light to provide rides at Harry Reid International Airport.
Current Waymo Las Vegas users will have the ability to book rides in and out of Ground Zero Level of Terminals 1 and 3 at Reid airport, Waymo announced Wednesday. Waymo operates within a 24-square-mile service area mainly centered around the resort corridor and some outlying areas including Chinatown, Allegiant Stadium and near UNLV.
“We’re excited to welcome Waymo’s autonomous fleet to our airport,” James Chrisley, Clark County director of aviation, said in a statement. “We serve millions of passengers every year, and as new technologies continue to evolve, we’re always looking for ways to bring new options and added convenience to our travelers. Welcoming Waymo is another step toward giving our passengers more choices in how they get to and from the airport.”
Waymo, which launched paid service in Las Vegas in September, will open airport service to more customers in the near future.
This marks the second autonomous ride-hailing service approved for Reid airport service. Zoox won approval in early September.
Waymo provides rides in its sixth-generation Ojai vehicle using a mix of radar, lidar, cameras and external audio receivers. The custom-built vehicles feature elevator-style doors, seating to accommodate four passengers and three large LED screens, where various ride elements can be controlled by the passengers.
Adding Waymo’s service is a milestone moment for both the autonomous vehicle company and the airport, according to Arica Gately, head of airport business development and partnerships for Waymo.
“Fully autonomous Waymo rides at Harry Reid International Airport offer a seamless, stress-free way for travelers to catch a flight or hit the town,” Gately said in a statement. “Thank you to LAS for partnering with us on this journey and helping us add a bit of magic to your airport’s travel experience.”
