A proposed Wawa store in Hampden Township has hit a roadblock.

During a May 29 meeting, Hampden Township Commissioners unanimously voted to deny the chain’s land development plan for a store at Technology Parkway at the intersection of Mount Zion Road and Technology Parkway near Wertzville Road.

Hampden Township Manager Keith Metts said Wawa’s developer did not present a plan that was compliant with all of the township’s ordinance regulations.

The Philadelphia area chain proposed to build a 6,049-square-foot store with 12 fuel pumps in front of the Residence Inn by Marriott at Cumberland Technology Parkway off of exit 61 on Interstate 81.

Hampden Township’s Planning Commission recommended at their May 8 meeting that the township deny Wawa’s plans.

Metts said Wawa can revisit the project but will have to resubmit plans and restart the application process.

Wawa is undergoing a major central Pa. expansion that will allow it to open about 40 stores over the next five to seven years. The chain announced the expansion in 2022.

It has already opened stores in Lower Swatara Township, East Pennsboro Township, Chambersburg, Dover, York, Hanover and Williamsport.
