Vermont DMV restructures, reduces White River hours

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Starting June 1, the Department of Motor Vehicles office will be open only on Wednesdays for nine months.

The move comes as VTrans is restructuring the Vermont DMV. The agency plans to increase the White River Junction schedule to two days a week “with extended hours” in early 2027, DMV Branch Operations Manager Anne Young confirmed Thursday. The upcoming reduced schedule will give the agency time to train more employees.

VTrans is in the process of restructuring the Vermont DMV to have teams stationed in Springfield to serve the southern part of the state, including White River Junction, and in Montpelier to serve the northern part of the state.

Previously the DMV operated a mobile team out of Montpelier for the entire state.

The agency hopes the change will reduce travel time for DMV employees, allow for consistent and expanded office hours and increase recruitment to address a 50% vacancy in the agency, according to an email Commissioner of Motor Vehicles Andrew Collier sent to legislators earlier this month.
