Vermont Civil War painting returns home after Texas discovery

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – A Civil War painting depicting Vermont soldiers has returned to the Green Mountains after being rediscovered at a Texas college.

The painting by Julian Scott shows Vermonters serving during the Chancellorsville Campaign, a critical battle leading to Union victory. CVU teacher Tyler Alexander rediscovered the artwork while researching his book at the Texas college.

Vermont Country Store owner Lyman Orton recently purchased the painting at auction. This week, community members celebrated the painting’s return to Vermont and recognized the role Vermonters played in the Civil War.

“More Vermonters were lost in the Union cause than any other state per capita. It has a lasting effect on every family in the state and continues to reverberate,” said David Schutz, Vermont State Curator.

The painting is currently on loan at the Vermont Statehouse and displayed in the Cedar Creek Room.
