Vanderburgh County jail inmate attempts escape while in hospital bathroom – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says it charged an inmate at the county jail with escape after he tried to flee custody while at a hospital.

According to a release about the charges, 36-year-old Connor Spachtholz, of Columbus, was taken from the jail to an area hospital for observation on Tuesday.

Around 3:30 p.m., Spachtholz asked to use the bathroom and to shower. He was secured in leg shackles and led in.

Sometime after, the deputy assigned to watch Spachtholz says he heard a “loud crash” from the bathroom. Going in to check on Spachtholz, the deputy noticed multiple ceiling tiles torn and on the floor, a hanging light, and a section of broken drywall.

According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s office, Spachtholz claims the damage was an accident. He says it was the result of his grabbing the shower curtain to avoid falling.

Investigators say that the shower curtain and its track were undamaged.

The suspect was discharged from the hospital and taken back to the Vanderburgh County Jail. Spachtholz is facing new charges of escape and criminal mischief.

He was originally being held on drug and fake ID charges.
