UVM Health Network to eliminate senior administrative roles by year’s end

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The UVM Health Network is making some big administrative cuts, eliminating several senior roles by the end of the year.

In a letter to staff, network president and CEO Dr. Stephen Leffler said he’ll be remaining in that role until they figure out a more permanent structure.

Other senior roles like chief operating officer, chief medical officer, and chief of staff are winding down by the end of the year, among other governance changes.

The announcement comes after former CEO Sunny Eappen stepped down suddenly last month.

The network has faced intense scrutiny from state health care regulators in recent months about its budget and bloated administrative costs. Around 20 percent of UVMMC’s 2024 budget was for administrative expenses; expenses that drive up what insurance companies reimburse hospitals, which in turn drives up Vermonters’ premiums and co-payments. Observers say the network’s new approach — encouraged by regulators — could help bring down those costs.

It is unclear how much money these changes will save the network, which told WCAX they view this as more about operational efficiency.
