USD holds steady in second half for 24-17 win over SDSU

VERMILLION, S.D. (KELO) — The latest installment of the Interstate Series was a one-score game for a second straight season. USD handed SDSU its third straight loss 24-17.

The Jackrabbits scored on the first play of the game – a 75-yard touchdown run. The Coyotes responded right away and we were off. The fireworks continued with both teams finding the endzone in the final 70 seconds of the half to make it 17 all heading into the locker room.

L.J. Phillips Jr. scored his second touchdown of the game in the third, and that proved to be the game-winner.

“We’ve had a very up and down season,” USD quarterback Aidan Bouman said. “We’ve found a way to string something together here towards the end. So, to fight with our backs against the wall the way we have, you know, like, like LJ said, just incredible shout out to our defense.”

“Penalties killed us a little,” SDSU wide receiver Jack Smith said. “Just finish drives. We’ve struggled with that season, but had a good week of practice, felt ready. We were there.”

The Jacks are back home for Illinois State next week. The Yotes close the regular season at Southern Illinois next Saturday.
