Unofficial municipal election results released Friday evening show strong support for sales tax cuts, and Nano Brooks widening his lead for the District 2 seat on the Assembly.

These are the second round of preliminary results, which have remained mostly steady since the first round released Tuesday, except for the third place slot on the Board of Education.

As of Friday, 9,896 ballots had been counted, about 35% of registered voters, according to the City and Borough of Juneau’s election summary report.

Ballot measures

Proposition 1, which would reduce the city’s property tax cap from 12 mills to 9 mills, edged forward with 5,002 yes votes (50.99%) and 4,807 no votes (49.01%).

Proposition 2, which seeks to remove the city’s 5% sales tax from essential food and utilities for all Juneau residents, remains the clear favorite, with nearly 70% of the vote.

Proposition 3 continues to fall short with 42% of the votes. The measure would introduce a split-rate sales tax of 3% in winter and 7.5% in summer.

Assembly and Board of Education

In the Assembly District 2 race, Brooks now leads incumbent Wade Bryson by 410 votes — 4,652 to 4,242 — securing 52.3% of the vote. The first round of results showed Brooks just three votes ahead of Bryson.

In the race for the Board of Education, Steve Whitney remains in first place with 5,096 votes, followed by Melissa Cullum with 3,995. Jenny Thomas moved into third position with 3,822, ahead of Jeremy “JJJ” Johnson, who trails with 3,695 votes. Write-in candidate Deedie Sorensen has 2,225.

The top two vote-getters will serve full terms, and the third-place finisher will fill a partial term on the board.

Official election results will be released on Oct. 21.
