UPDATE: WMDT has confirmed with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) that a woman has turned herself in after striking a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Tuesday.
Sheriff Mike Lewis told WMDT that a 62-year-old woman turned herself into the Salisbury Police Department shortly after the incident occurred on Feb. 3. The woman claims she did not know she struck an agent, and subsequently left the scene after stopping briefly. Upon turning herself in, police reported the woman was extremely distraught upon hearing she struck a officer.
Officers say the injured agent struck her windshield, and caused damage to her passenger-side mirror. The agent suffered contusions and abrasions, and was initially believed to have a broken leg.
WCSO has determined no malicious intent at this time. The woman has not yet been charged, but may face charges as the investigation into the accident unfolds.
SALISBURY, Md. – The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is investigating a hit-and-run incident involving a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent that occurred on Tuesday morning.
At 6:48 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of Pemberton Drive and Diamondback Drive after receiving a report that an ICE agent was struck by a passing motor vehicle. Deputies determined the agent was assisting with traffic direction around the scene when he was struck. The driver of the vehicle left the area without attempting to contact agents on the scene.
All agents on the scene were reportedly wearing clothing and/or equipment that clearly identified them as law enforcement officers. Officials have determined there is no evidence at this time to indicate the agent was struck due to their employment with ICE. There is no known threat to the public or other ICE agents as it relates to this incident.
The injured agent was treated at a local hospital for non-life threating injuries and later released. A suspect has been identified at this time, but their identity is being withheld as the matter is still under investigation.
