VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Police Department is providing an update regarding the report of a suspicious, person-shaped object observed on live-scope sonar in the Sheyenne River on June 12, 2026.
Police Chief Nick Horner said following the initial report, an extensive search of the area was conducted with the assistance of the Jamestown Regional Dive Team and Valley City Fire and Rescue. The dive team utilized specialized underwater search equipment, including a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV), to thoroughly examine the reported location. After an extensive search, no object matching the original description was located. Search personnel identified only tree debris and other natural materials within the area of concern.
Horner said at this time, no evidence has been discovered indicating any threat to public safety. The Valley City Police Department will continue to monitor the river and investigate any additional information that may become available.
The Valley City Police Department reminds residents and visitors to exercise caution when near rivers and other waterways. River conditions can change rapidly, and hazards such as strong currents, submerged debris, unstable banks, and varying water depths may be present. Individuals are encouraged to supervise children closely, wear appropriate flotation devices when participating in water-related activities, and remain aware of their surroundings.
