Two Durham shootings within minutes worry business owner

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN)- Durham Police are continuing to investigate two separate shootings that occurred early Sunday.

The first happened around 1:50 a.m. near the 100 block of East Main Street at the parking garage on South Mangum Street.

Wayne Watson is a bartender at 106 Main next door and was closing when gunshots were fired.

“Just loud, and hearing cars screech off and people running everywhere — that kind of thing,” Watson said about the commotion.

A short time later, his boss, Mike Bourquin, had just arrived home on Meade Lane, where another shooting happened.

“There was quite a bit of police, and law enforcement right here in the neighborhood,” Bourquin said.

CBS17 Haylee Kennedy asked if it was shocking to see the police presence so close to home.

Bourquin replied, “no.”

Bourquin explained that his street has seen a series of police activities since they have lived there. He said police are typically at the house where the shooting happened.

But the crime in Durham is something he has noticed increasing at both his neighborhood and his business.

“It makes us feel like we are not being taken care of in Durham,” Bourquin said.

The front door to 106 Main has been completely shattered after an unrelated incident on Friday.

“On Friday, a guy was pushing a girl up against our window and I went up, I don’t like violence on females, I just banged on the door and said, ‘Hey stop that get out of here’ and he came and punched the glass out with his bare hand,” Watson said.

The bar has been open since 2013, and employees and Bourquin say they have never seen crime to this extreme — except recently.

Now, they are losing customers.

“It’s just not worth it, the Triangle has such an amazing area and there’s so many places that you can go to know that you don’t have to deal with this and that’s just the truth,” Bourquin said.

Police do not believe the two shootings were connected.

No arrests have been made.
