Two of central Arkansas’ youth theater programs are joining forces for a collaborative production of “The Wedding Singer” at Benton’s historic Royal Theatre next year.
The Royal Theatre’s Young Players and Stage 13 announced they will co-produce the musical from Jan. 7-24, bringing together performers from the Stage 13 Pre-Professional Company and Young Players Second Stage. Organizers say the partnership is designed to showcase collaboration while helping develop the next generation of Arkansas performers.
The production marks the first collaboration between the two organizations, both of which focus on providing performance and educational opportunities for young actors.
“The Wedding Singer” also has a special connection to The Royal Theatre. The musical was previously staged there a decade ago and is returning with a new cast and creative partnership.
“When we produced it ten years ago, audiences absolutely embraced it, and it’s exciting to bring it back for a new generation of performers,” said Director Justin Pike. “One of the stars of that production was Stage 13 Education Director Bridget Davis, which makes this full-circle moment even more meaningful.”
Daphne Shoppach, one of the founders of Young Players, said combining the strengths of both organizations will create a unique experience for performers and audiences alike.
“Combining the rich tradition and outstanding students of Young Players Second Stage with the incredible talent and work ethic of the Stage 13 Pre-Professional Company creates an opportunity unlike anything we’ve done before. I think audiences are going to witness something truly special.”
Although Stage 13 was founded less than a year ago, the organization has already partnered with several Arkansas arts organizations, giving students opportunities to perform at venues including The Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Wildwood Park for the Arts, Robinson Center and Murry’s Dinner Playhouse.
“This partnership is exactly the kind of collaboration Stage 13 was created to encourage,” said Stage 13 Co-Executive Directors Alyson Courtney and Warren McCullough. “The Royal Theatre is a true Arkansas treasure with an incredible legacy of developing young artists. Bringing our Pre-Professional Company together with their students feels like a natural fit. We’re excited to introduce our audiences to The Royal, welcome Royal patrons to experience Stage 13, and create something that is bigger than either organization could accomplish alone.”
The Royal Theatre’s Young Players program is celebrating its 25th anniversary and has become known for preparing young performers for collegiate theater programs and professional careers.
Based on the 1998 film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, “The Wedding Singer” blends comedy, romance and a soundtrack inspired by the 1980s. Organizers said the production will feature young performers from both programs alongside professional adult actors.
Audition details, performance times and ticket information will be announced in the coming weeks.
