Trevon Diggs arrives to Seahawks ‘to show I’m still the best’

Trevon Diggs’ biggest reason for joining the Seahawks isn’t as much about football — though joining the defending Super Bowl champions wasn’t exactly a turn-off.
For the about-to-turn-28-year-old former All-Pro cornerback, Seattle was about familiarity.
“I know a lot of familiar faces here,” Diggs said Wednesday, soon after he signed a one-year, free-agent contract to enter coach Mike Macdonald’s plans as a third cornerback in what was the NFL’s top-ranked defense last season.
Diggs played collegiately with Seahawks starting cornerback Josh Jobe at Alabama. Seahawks defensive backs coach Karl Scott coached Diggs at Alabama, in 2018 and ‘19.
Upon entering the NFL in 2020 as Dallas’ second-round pick, becoming an All-Pro with a league-high 11 interceptions in 2021 and making the Pro Bowl in that plus the 2022 seasons, Diggs was Cowboys teammates with Seahawks outside linebacker DeMarcus Lawrence.
Seattle’s defensive coordinator, Aden Durde, was Dallas’ defensive line coach when Diggs played for the Cowboys. Seahawks cornerback Noah Igbinoghene played one season in Dallas in the same Cowboys secondary as Diggs.
“Talking to those guys, they said it was a great fit,” Diggs said of Seattle. “Just everything that they have going here, I would love to be a part of it.”
Why do the Seahawks want Diggs?
Macdonald doesn’t like his situation at third cornerback since his Seahawks let Riq Woolen leave in free agency to a one-year, $12 million Philadelphia Eagles contract in march.
That dissatisfaction can’t be more obvious.
The coach, with general manager John Schneider, pursued signing Terrion Arnold, despite him facing eight felony charges in Florida and possibly life in prison. Seattle’s agreement last week to sign the Detroit Lions’ former starter and first-round draft choice is still in play.
In the meantime, Macdonald and his Seattle defense are turning to a former All-Pro cornerback who has played primarily outside in his career, with some experience in the slot as a nickel cornerback.
Diggs is expected to travel with the team to Nashville, Tennessee, Thursday for Seattle’s joint practice against the Titans Friday. The Seahawks and Titans play a preseason game in Tennessee Sunday night.
He hasn’t played or practiced on an NFL field since he had one tackle in a playoff game for the Green Bay Packers in mid-January. The Packers released him after that game, after he played only two games for them.
He also met with the Lions about possibly signing with them. Other teams contacted him. But after the Seahawks called a few days ago and he flew to the Northwest for his tryout, he —and they — decided Seattle was the fit.
Can Diggs be in condition to play a week from Friday when the Seahawks have their final preseason game, Aug. 28 at Kansas City?
“Oh, possibly,” he said. “I’ve got to put the work in, get practice reps.
“Maybe.”
The season begins for the Seahawks Sept. 9 against New England in the league’s kick-off game at Lumen Field.
Diggs becomes Macdonald’s new option at cornerback past unproven Nehemiah Pritchett, a third-year pro and 2024 Seahawks draft choice who has been playing with Devon Witherspoon and Jobe in Seattle’s training camp.
Hours after the news Tuesday that Arnold will go straight onto the NFL commissioner’s exempt list as soon as he signs, unable to practice or play for Seattle, the Seahawks had Diggs in for a tryout Tuesday.
He turns 28 next month. He had a league-high 11 interceptions for Dallas in 2021. Diggs played eight games for Dallas and one for Green Bay last season. He went on the Cowboys’ injured reserve list in October because of concussion symptoms following an accident at his home plus a knee injury. Dallas waived him in December.
The concussion was from Diggs trying to mount a television onto a wall in his home. The TV slipped from his grasp and fell.
“Yeah, fell on my head,” he said Wednesday.
“I was out of concussion protocol in, like, a week. But I was dealing with some other injuries.”
Asked what he sees from afar in Macdonald’s multiple, switching, attacking defense, Diggs said: “It looks amazing.
“You know, they get to the quarterback. They create turnovers. They do all the right things.
“So, you know, I’m excited to hopefully be a part of it.
“I’m looking to show I’m still the best.
“I’m looking to show that I just want to win.”
