SELMA, N.C. (WNCN) — A man was arrested and charged early Friday morning in the deadly hit-and-run incident that took place Wednesday evening in Selma.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers charged 44-year-old Ronald Mayo with felony hit and run involving a death in Johnston County. Troopers said Mayo was taken into custody at a residence off of U.S. Highway 70 without incident.

Mayo is accused of killing a line worker repairing low-hanging power lines in Selma around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday on Live Oak Church Road near Carmil Drive.

Troopers said Mayo was driving a flatbed tow truck hauling a sewer cleaner truck when they said he disregarded a stop signal and drove through the scene, where the truck got entangled with one of the lines and caused one technician to fall from the pole in repair.

The dead line worker was identified by troopers as 29-year-old James P. Rudzki of Wendell.

Also according to troopers, Mayo left the scene in his tow truck before being taken into custody.

Mayo will face a judge Friday at the Johnston County courthouse.
