Western Kentucky’s men’s golf team wrapped up the first day of the Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina.
The Hilltoppers are in seventh place heading into the final round on Monday. WKU is 22-over par as a team after carding a 12-over 296 in the first round and a 10-over 294 in the second.
WKU sophomore Will Easterlin is tied for the lead in the tournament. Easterlin fired a 4-under 67 in the first round and followed it up with a 1-under 70 in the second for an overall 5-under par score. Through the first two rounds, Easterlin has nine birdies, the most of any golfer in the field. His 4.00 stroke average on par 5 holes is also the best rate in the tournament. So far this season, Easterlin has had sub 70 scores in four rounds of 14 rounds played.
“Will played great today,” WKU coach Austin King said in a news release. “He managed the tough conditions well, putted great and I’m excited for him to have another opportunity to win tomorrow. Everyone else had a rough go today. We’ve got to manage things better when the conditions get tough like they were and we just didn’t do a great job of that today. We have a good opportunity to bounce back tomorrow, and I know they’ll make the proper adjustments to do so.”
Senior Gage Doyle, playing as an individual in the tournament, is tied for 25th place with a 5-over score. He carded a 4-over 75 in the first round and a 1-over 72 in the second. Doyle is averaging 4.33 strokes on par 5s, which is tied for the third best rate in the field.
Senior Rafe Blankenship is tied for 36th place heading into the final round with a 7-over score.
