LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — It was a picture-perfect morning in Las Vegas as runners, young and old, took on the Las Vegas Marathon, half marathon, and the “702” race – a 7.02-mile run paying tribute to the city’s area code.
Thousands laced up their shoes for the 2nd annual event. This year’s race took place in the northwest valley and featured runners from all 50 states.
“I just love visiting other cities like Las Vegas; I can’t go wrong with that. We came as a group, and I found myself having a great time here,” Mando Lopez said.
“Las Vegas lowkey has a place in my heart. I did a relay race from LA to Vegas a year ago,” Andrew Kim said.
Crowds of families and friends lined the streets with signs of encouragement, cheering runners through the last stretch to the finish line. Runners like Mando Lopez and Andrew Kim spent weeks preparing, sticking to consistent training and a healthy diet. It all paid off when they crossed the finish line.
“I feel really good. I broke my personal record by 4 minutes; that’s a great feeling,” Lopez said. “And the weather was better than I thought it would be. The vibes were good; my friends were cheering me on on the side and during the race. Everyone here is just friendly.”
“I feel great. This is my fastest time, so I’m proud of myself,” Lily Park said.
Park completed the half-marathon in preparation for the full marathon she will run in Honolulu this December.
“I’m proud of my progress and my time,” Park said. “I had a lot of fun; loving it.”
“It doesn’t matter how fast you do it as long as you consistently can make it from beginning to end, whatever pace, that’s the way to go about it,” Lopez said. “And also having a great support system; that definitely is a must.”
This year’s marathon winner was 23-year-old Trevor Giampa of Illinois. He finished in 2 hours, 23 minutes, and 30 seconds. For the full list of results, click here.
