THORNTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — A Thorntown farmer was arrested and charged with attempted murder for shooting at a crop duster in the air over his farm last summer, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Kedrick J. Miller, 41, is being held without bond at the Boone County jail while waiting for his court date. The arrest followed a monthslong investigation into the shooting that happened July 18, 2025.

In a news release issued last summer, the office said the crop duster was shot between 6-7 p.m. near the intersection of state roads 32 and 75, near the unincorporated community of Dover. It’s about a 40-minute drive northwest of downtown Indianapolis.

The pilot, who was not injured, safely landed the plane. The release issued last summer did not name the pilot or the crop-dusting business.

The FBI and the Federal Aviation Administration were part of the investigation.

The Boone County Prosecutor’s Office filed several charges against Miller, including attempted murder, attempting to disrupt an aircraft, criminal recklessness, and intimidation. His initial hearing was set for 8:30 a.m. Friday in Boone Circuit Court in Lebanon.

Sheriff Tony Harris said the pilot and people on the ground could have been hurt if the plane crashed or if a bullet missed the target.

The Republican sheriff said the shooting created a dangerous situation for the pilot and those on the ground. “This case serves as a reminder that decisions made in the heat of the moment can have serious and lasting consequences. Any time a firearm is intentionally discharged at an occupied aircraft, it creates an extremely dangerous situation with the potential for catastrophic consequences. Pilots operating agricultural aircraft provide an important service to our farming community and deserve to do their jobs without being placed in harm’s way.”
