BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – On this day in 2004, the Red Sox pulled off an improbable comeback to beat the Yankees in the American League championship and exercise the curse of the bambino.
The historic win prompted a joyous celebration that morphed into a riot at UVM.
Our Darren Perron was there.
On UVM’s Redstone campus, the party turns to chaos. Fires are set. Fences destroyed, and light poles toppled,” he reported.
Police said about a thousand students participated in the unrest, and 17 of them were charged with crimes.
UVM estimated the damages at around $50,000 dollars.
The Red Sox went on to win the World Series – their first since 1918.
