There’s another sharp shift on Trump’s approval rating, new poll shows

President Donald Trump’s approval rating has been on a roller coaster ride.

Voters keep shifting their views on how the Republican president is handling his job about four months into his second term in office. Just last week, the Reuters/Ipsos poll found that his approval rating ticked up two percentage points to a 44% approval rating.

However, that honeymoon polling period did not last long.

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, released Tuesday, found that Trump’s approval rating dipped back down to 42%. Reuters noted that this approval rating matches the lowest level of his second term, where he has faced backlash for his unpopular economic policies.

The new poll found that while his overall approval rating dropped, his approval rating on the economy ticked up.

About 33% of respondents approved of how Trump was handling the cost of living, up from the 31% who said so last week. He is still underwater when asked about how he is handling the economy and employment. Just 39% of adults approve of how he is handling the economy and 41% approve of how he is handling jobs and employment.

The poll was conducted May 16-18 among 1,024 adults and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Other polls have shown Trump’s approval rating slightly improving in recent weeks.

The latest Morning Consult poll showed 48% of voters approving of Trump’s job performance—his highest approval rating Morning Consult has recorded since mid-March. The poll showed that half of the voters still disapproved of Trump’s job performance, but that dropped two percentage points since last week.

A recent Harvard CAPS/Harris poll also found that 46% approved of how Trump is handling the economy, which is up from the 43% who said the same last month. Another 43% said they approved of how Trump is dealing with inflation, which is up two percentage points from last month.

Another poll, sponsored by a conservative media outlet, showed improvement in Trump’s approval rating earlier this month. The Quantus Insights poll showed a virtual tie, with 48.2% of respondents saying they approve of Trump while 48.3% said they disapprove.

To be clear, his approval rating still remains historically low when compared to other presidents at the beginning of their terms. According to Reuters, former President Joe Biden had a 55% approval rating at a similar point in his presidency.
