Test will sound flash flood warning in the Juneau area

Juneau residents can expect to hear a flash flood alert later this month
The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office in Juneau and Alaska Electric Light & Power (AEL&P) will be conducting a functional live test of the Salmon Creek Dam Notification System Sept. 23 between 10 a.m. and noon. The system relies on dedicated outdoor emergency evacuation sirens in the Salmon Creek floodplain rather than standard citywide digital mass-notification apps.
The live code test will broadcast a flash flood warning via audio and specific area message encoding tones over National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Weather Radio transmitters serving the Juneau area.
The audio message will use the phrase “Flash flood warning” and will state several times that the message is only a test.
The test supports AEL&P’s Emergency Alert Notification System for the dam, and maximizes participation in the drill by local emergency management, broadcasters, and the test broadcast system.
This test will not be sent to cellphones via the Wireless Emergency Alert system. Should there be significant weather hazards around the Juneau area on Sept. 23, the test may be cancelled.
