A 19-year-old is in custody in Illinois after 11 were injured during a Memorial Day weekend mass shooting in Little River, Horry County Police Department said Thursday, May 29.

Shawon Shamarion Williams, 19, has been taken into custody in Lake County, Illinois, and is expected to be charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

The incident happened Sunday night, May 25, about 9:15 p.m. after the Hurricane II charter boat docked along Watson Avenue. An altercation on the boat led to the shooting, which happened off the boat, police said.

There were 120 passengers and four crew members on board. Police said a single shooter is accused of injuring 11 people. Of those 11, eight were taken to Grand Strand Medical Center by Horry County Fire and Rescue, Horry County Fire Chief Joey Tanner said. The remainder were transported by personal vehicles, including several to McLeod Seacoast Hospital in Little River.

After Williams is charged, he will be extradited back to Horry County, HCPD said, adding others could be charged as the investigation continues.
