Teen killed in Mesa shooting

A double shooting at an apartment complex near the U.S. 60 and Val Vista Drive left 16-year-old Azriel Lloyd dead. Another person who was hurt in the shooting is expected to survive.

MESA, Ariz. – A double shooting on Wednesday night at an apartment complex in Mesa left a teenager dead and an adult hurt.

What we know:

The shooting happened just before 10 p.m. on May 21 near the U.S. 60 and Val Vista Drive.

Mesa Police say officers responded to the scene and found two people with gunshot wounds. Both victims were taken to a hospital where 16-year-old Azriel Lloyd died. The other victim is expected to survive.

Shots fired during attempted robbery

Investigators say Lloyd and the other victim were hosting a party at the apartments where they “were planning to meet and rob someone.”

“Multiple people were interviewed, and a potential suspect vehicle was identified and followed to the Litchfield Park area,” Det. Richard Giles said. “Ultimately two investigative leads were interviewed, but no arrests have been made in this homicide case.”

Police believe the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no active threat to the community.

Police say they are in the early stages of their investigation and are looking for anyone who witnessed the shooting.
