Tax assistance centers closed in Bangor and Augusta

With a little more than a month until federal tax returns are due, two federal offices that had offered in-person tax assistance to residents of northern and eastern Maine are closed.

It’s unclear how long the Bangor and Augusta Taxpayer Assistance Centers have been closed, though the Bangor location was open for the 2025 filing season.

The Internal Revenue Service currently lists just one open Taxpayer Assistance Center, in South Portland.

A fourth center, in Presque Isle, was closed in 2018 and has not been reopened.

U.S. Sens Susan Collins and Angus King, and U.S. Rep. Jared Golden are pushing for the IRS to reopen the centers, noting that some Maine residents now would need to drive nearly 300 miles to get in-person tax assistance from the IRS. Additionally, the delegation noted the potential need for help with the new tax provisions of last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
