SUV driver distracted by phone before smashing into school bus in Johnston County, officials say

WILLOW SPRING, N.C. (WNCN) – Several emergency crews responded to a crash involving a school bus in Johnston County early Monday morning.

The crash occurred around 7:50 a.m. near the intersection of N.C. Highway 50 and Sanders Road in Willow Spring, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the bus was heading southbound on NC-50, and as the driver attempted to turn left onto Sanders Road, a red Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling northbound ran a red light and collided with the bus.

The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee told troopers that he was looking at his phone, so he was cited for the incident, NCSHP officials said. He also sustained minor injuries.

Nine kids in total, as well as the driver, were inside the bus at the time of the wreck, but nobody was hurt, according to troopers.

The intersection was shut down for a brief period of time, but has since fully reopened.

Johnston County Public Schools also confirmed a second crash involving a school bus on Monday morning near Clayton High School. Six students were riding this bus, but no injuries were reported.

A school spokesperson said all students were transported to their respective schools – McGee’s Crossroads Middle School and Clayton High School – by a different bus to continue their day.
