Suspicious package at F.E. Warren AFB Gate 1 prompts evacuations, road closures

CHEYENNE, Wyo. — A suspicious package reported at F.E. Warren Air Force Base Gate 1 led to building evacuations and a shelter-in-place order Thursday morning.

Base officials established an 1,850-foot cordon around Gate 1 following the report. Personnel in 15 separate buildings, including the Shoppette and Blue Federal Credit Union, were ordered to shelter in place.

The base Child Development Center evacuated to Freedom Hall. Base officials stated that parents are not authorized to pick up children at this time.

Personnel were told to use Gate 5 to enter and exit the installation until further notice.

The Laramie County Emergency Management Agency issued an emergency alert at 9:30 a.m. asking residents on the east side of the base up to McComb Avenue, Country Club Avenue, and down to Cosgriff Court to evacuate.

“Do not panic it is a safety precaution,” the Laramie County Combined Communication Center said in a statement.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation closed Interstate 25 southbound lanes between mileposts 11 and 12.75. Exit 11 is also closed due to law enforcement activity.
