Suspected DUI driver hits 2 pedestrians in southwest Las Vegas valley

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A crash in the southwest Las Vegas valley left two people with life-threatening injuries Saturday after police say they were hit by a suspected impaired driver.

It happened just before 11 p.m. near Mel Torme Way and Spring Mountain Road. According to Las Vegas Metro Police, a Toyota Camry was heading north on Mel Torme Way when two pedestrians began crossing the street in the south crosswalk, against the pedestrian signal.

The driver of the Camry also entered the intersection on a red light, hitting both pedestrians and throwing them onto the roadway, police said.

Emergency crews took the two pedestrians to a nearby hospital, where they suffered serious, life-threatening injuries.

Police said the driver, identified as Berekat Welday, 44, stayed at the scene and showed signs of impairment. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and reckless driving.
