A Jacksonville man has been arrested on a capital murder charge after a meeting Friday to sell guns for drugs and money went awry, according to a news release from Jacksonville police.
Around 8:17 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a shots fired call near Beverly and Carolyn streets, about two blocks east of Interstate 57 in south Jacksonville, the release says. Officers found a man, later identified as Kelveontay Poole of Jacksonville, in the roadway suffering from gunshot wounds, the release says.
Jay Longhibler, 20, of Jacksonville told police he shot Poole in self-defense, the release says.
According to police, Longhibler had agreed to sell firearms to Poole and another person in exchange for money and narcotics. The three had met for the transaction when one pulled out a gun and robbed Longhibler of the firearms, the release says.
Police said that Longhibler shot at the buyers as they fled. Gunfire was exchanged, and Poole was struck, the release says.
Poole was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his wounds, the release says.
Longhibler was being held Saturday in the Pulaski County jail, according to an online inmate roster.
