KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A fight broke out at a Kalamazoo restaurant before a man pulled a gun and started shooting, surveillance video obtained by News 8 shows.
Police say the shooting happened during a fight early Saturday on September 20 at Two Fellas Grill, located along Michigan Avenue near Euclid Avenue in Kalamazoo. Authorities say that four people were shot.
A 19-year-old man was shot in the leg, two 23-year-old men were both shot in the foot and another 23-year-old man was shot in the stomach.
Video from inside Two Fellas Grill showed a group of individuals getting into a fight and punching each other. Shortly after, a man who police have identified as 19-year-old Naledge Quincy Lovon Williams Chamberlain held up a gun and began firing what police say was a black handgun.
Then, he is seen running out of the restaurant.
Parking lot surveillance video at the restaurant showed a large group of people running to safety after the gunfire. In that video, the police said Chamberlain could be seen running towards vehicles and firing more shots towards the restaurant before running.
Police arrived at the scene three minutes after the first 911 call. The officer “saw blood that led to both of the bathrooms” before they “checked the south bathroom, and it was empty of persons but filled with blood,” according to an incident report.
From there, the officer knocked on the other bathroom door, was let in and found a victim who was hit on both their legs.
Officers on scene interviewed 21 witnesses, according to the incident report.
While on scene, officers discovered “five fired cartridge casings, 9-millimeter in caliber” outside of Two Fellas on the grass. Inside, officers found “six fired cartridge casings 9-millimeter in caliber.”
Officers also recovered “bloody clothing.”
Chamberlain is still on the run as of Friday and is considered to be armed and dangerous as they did recover a firearm while on scene. He is wanted on a 25-count warrant, police say.
The shooting prompted Two Fellas Grill to ramp up security at its establishment. In a post, the restaurant said the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety will have a stronger presence outside its location near the intersection of West Michigan Avenue and Euclid Avenue.
It also said it hired armed private security to protect employees and customers at the restaurant.
News 8 spoke to the owners of Two Fellas Grill shortly after the shooting, who wanted to remain anonymous. Both of them said the shooting was a shocking, but not surprising reality.
“Everyone is going to be a little shaken up after a tragic incident like that, that is something that is going to stick with you for a while,” the owners said.
Police say another man who was allegedly involved in the fight but was not the shooter was arraigned Tuesday with a carrying a concealed weapons charge. He was given a $5,000 cash surety bond.
