State prisoner dies in custody in Torrington

CASPER, Wyo. —On Tuesday, the Wyoming Department of Corrections announced the death of an inmate at the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington.

Russel Tanner, 74, was a Rock Springs native was serving an effective 14- to 20-year sentence for possession of child sexual abuse materials. He died on Sunday, Jan. 25, according to the release.

“Per WDOC policy an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death. WDOC does not release protected health information,” the release said.

“Mr. Tanner was convicted on July 16, 2021 in Sweetwater County by Judge Richard Lavery on seventeen (17) counts Possession of Child Pornography (W.S. 6-2-101),” the release added.
