BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has declared a state of emergency due to the ongoing government shutdown.
Chairman Steven Sitting Bear signed the declaration on Friday, October 24, and it is set to remain in effect until the federal government is reopened.
The declaration orders a number of tribal programs and departments to coordinate aid for tribal members and work with local governments and non-profits.
The declaration also allocates emergency funds to the tribal council to support tribal departments in need.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is located on the border of North Dakota and South Dakota, with just under 8,000 residents as of 2020.
