A second-quarter flurry was more than enough for the South Warren football team, which rolled to a 49-14 win over Daviess County on Friday at South Warren High School.
South Warren (9-0 overall, 3-0 Class 6A, District 2) turned a first-quarter deficit into a rout by halftime as the Spartans locked up the top seed in the district and are guaranteed home games for at least the first two rounds of the Class 6A state playoffs.
“I told the guys I thought it was going to be a challenge,” South Warren coach Brandon Smith said. “I didn’t think these guys were going to lay down for us. They were going to come out swinging and they did. Once we calmed down, we settled in and took care of business.”
South Warren got a while to get going with the first two drives ending on downs in Panthers territory. Daviess County (4-5, 1-2) was able to dent the scoreboard first when quarterback Garrison Baker avoided the rush and fired a pass downfield to Hunter Corbin for a 64-yard touchdown that made the score 6-0 just over five minutes in.
The Spartans finally got on the board with a bit of trickery, with running back Kaiden York taking the pitch and then firing a 26-yard strike to Justin Capps, giving South Warren a 7-6 lead with 10:49 left in the half.
“I love throwing the football,” York said. “It’s just natural to me. We’ve been running it in practice and I’ve been waiting to throw it in a game.”
That score opened the floodgates – with South Warren erupting for 35 points in the second quarter.
York followed the touchdown pass with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown on the next play by Daviess County to add to the lead. Two minutes later, Camden Page connected with Capps on a touchdown pass to make the score 21-6.
York added a rushing touchdown with 3:13 left in the half and Chase Bell’s 3-yard touchdown pass to Tucker Sears capped the second quarter scoring barrage that allowed the Spartans to build a 35-6 halftime advantage.
“(The first touchdown) kind of got us going,” Smith said. “Then the defense made a play and we kind of got in a groove after that.”
South Warren opened the second half with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Page to Jake Carter to force the KHSAA-mandated running clock. The South Warren defense struck again for the final score – a 41-yard pick 6 by Cole Kuzma with four minutes left in the third.
“The secondary did a very good job,” York said. “We have an injury to one of our corners. He’s out for the season. We’ve got subs in, but they did a very good job in the secondary.”
Daviess County was able to add a long touchdown on the final drive of the game, but finished with 189 total yards, -7 rushing yards, and four turnovers.
“I thought the defense did a really nice job,” Smith said. “They were really aggressive. They had that one play, but other than that they played really well. Offensively, we just had a couple of miscues here and there the first two series and then we got in the groove and got going.”
South Warren finished with 282 yards.
Page had seven completions for 79 yards, while Bell was 6-for-6 for 42 yards. Jamir Boards led the ground game with 65 yards rushing, while Capps had four catches for 62 yards.
South Warren will wrap up the regular season hosting Logan County at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
“We won our district and that is the first step,” Smith said. “We are going to finish it off with great competition here next week.”
