The South Warren volleyball team punched its ticket to the Region 4 championship for the first time since 2019 with a 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-11) win over Logan County in Monday’s semifinal at Bowling Green High School.

South Warren (28-13) used another complete effort to make short work of Logan County, improving to 10-2 in the last 12 games. First-year coach Caleb Sheffield said his team is playing some of its best volleyball of the season.

“It’s been part of the plan from the beginning,” Sheffield said. “We knew we had the athleticism, the talent. Well, I guess I shouldn’t say we knew we had the athleticism. Some of these girls came to us late. A couple of girls are seniors and hadn’t been with the team before. We just knew that we had it. There is something special about this group for sure.”

Logan County (23-14) scored the first point in all three sets, but the Spartans were able to quickly seize momentum every time to secure the victory.

South Warren took control of the first set with a 12-2 run that pushed the margin to 17-6. The Spartans had 10 kills and five aces in the set, with Olivia Wells closing it out with a kill.

A 5-1 spurt pushed South Warren in front 9-4 in set two, but Logan County answered with six straight to briefly gain the advantage. South Warren scored four straight to go back in front and eventually got the margin up to as high as 10.

In set three South Warren scored five straight to make the score 8-4 and never looked back, steadily pulling away to finish off the sweep.

Wells led South Warren with 11 kills.

“When I saw defensively my block for my line was not there, I just swung at the line a lot,” Olivia Wells said. “Then when they were there, I just took advantage of the block.”

Reagan Reynolds had five kills and six aces, part of a night where South Warren delivered 13 total aces.

“That was one of the key emphasis we had coming into this tournament,” Sheffield said. “We knew we were going to have to serve well. You’ve got your Bowling Green, your Warren East, Logan County – all those (teams) that are going to be able to provide a lot of athleticism. You’ve got to get them out of system and that is what we were trying to do tonight.”

Ashley McIntosh, named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Maggie Mitchell, finished with six kills for Logan County.

South Warren will look for the program’s first region championship since 2017 when it faces host Bowling Green. The Lady Purples are looking for a third straight title and fifth in six seasons.

“They are a dangerous team,” Sheffield said. “They are one of the best teams in the state. We know this. We have played them three times. We are 0-9 in sets against them, but the vast majority – I would say at least eight of them have been very competitive – points and time where we have had the lead. We just have to finish. We just need to play like we have been playing here. If we do that I like our chances.”
