Southern Maine man faces explosives charge after raid

A South Portland man was arrested and faces a criminal explosives charge after police raided his home on Wednesday.

The South Portland Police Department and Southern Maine Regional SWAT Team executed a “high-risk search warrant” at a single-family home at 65 Florence St., where they allegedly found black powder and an “unidentified suspicious substance,” South Portland police said.

The South Portland Fire Department and Portland Bomb Squad were called in, and neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Police arrested the only resident of the home, John Flumerfelt, 40, and took him to Cumberland County Jail. He is charged with criminal use of explosives, and may face other charges, the South Portland department said.

The department deemed the area safe and said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
