Southern’s hot streak against Southwestern Athletic Conference opponents came to an end.
No. 2 Southern was routed 15-6 by No. 3 FAMU on Thursday in the SWAC Tournament at Rickwood Field in Birmingham.
The Rattlers snapped the Jaguars’ 16-game win streak against SWAC opponents. The last time Southern (27-22, 20-7 SWAC) lost to a conference opponent was April 4 against No. 1 Bethune-Cookman.
FAMU (29-22, 22-8 SWAC) seized control early and never relinquished. It took a 3-0 lead in the third behind two RBIs from sophomore shortstop Matthew Perez. Southern starter Myles Dismute walked four and gave up three earned runs.
The Rattlers’ defense was sharp throughout, highlighted by the strong play of graduate right fielder Caden Kresak. Left‑handed sophomore Garrett Workman allowed one hit over three innings on the mound.
The Jaguars tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to trail 3-2. Senior first baseman Jaylon Lucky delivered a two-run home run to left field that ignited his team.
FAMU answered in the fifth with three runs on RBI singles by seniors Josue Figueroa and Jordan Brown and a sacrifice fly from redshirt senior William Brown.
Southern surrendered three more runs in the sixth and managed only one of its own, falling behind 9-3 entering the seventh. Lucky hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored senior catcher Luis Ayala.
Coach Chris Crenshaw turned to five pitchers, but the Rattlers stayed in rhythm at the plate throughout. One of the top hitters for FAMU was Perez, who went 3-of-6 with four RBIs.
FAMU added three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth. Southern totaled 10 hits, while the Rattlers piled up 19.
The Jaguars’ next game is against No. 6 Texas Southern at 9 a.m. on Friday at Rickwood Field.
