Snohomish County Council recognizes Transgender Remembrance Day

EVERETT — The Snohomish County Council passed a resolution Tuesday recognizing Nov. 20 as Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Council member Megan Dunn brought the resolution forward for the first time this year, she said during Tuesday’s council meeting. She voted for the resolution, along with council members Strom Peterson and Jared Mead. Council members Sam Low and Nate Nehring voted against.

“Recognizing Transgender Day of Remembrance reflects values of dignity, inclusion and respect that matter deeply to many county employees and community members,” Snohomish County employee Jessica Sowa said before the resolution vote. “Observances and resolutions such as this one give us the opportunities to pause and remember the people behind the names.

Transgender Day of Remembrance started in 1999 and is now an annual observance to honor the memory of those who died from anti-transgender violence. A study from UCLA showed transgender people are over four times more likely than cisgender people to experience violence in their lifetime.
