SNAP benefits paused in November due to government shutdown

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is pausing SNAP benefits in November due to the government shutdown.

At the direction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, SNAP benefits will be delayed on Wednesday if the federal government shutdown continues into next month.

“This federal shutdown is completely avoidable, but Senate Democrats continue to refuse to pass a clean funding extension. That’s why this is the Schumer Shutdown,” said Governor Jim Pillen in a press release. “Because of D.C.’s political games, the SNAP benefits that many Nebraska families and kids depend on are about to be turned off. The Democrats locked Americans into this mess, and the Democrats hold the key to getting us out of it.”

“DHHS has a plan in place to immediately begin working with the USDA to process payments and get benefits to recipients as soon as possible when the government shutdown ends,” said CEO Steve Corsi.”

Current SNAP recipients may continue to use any remaining benefits on their EBT cards, according to DHHS.

Unspent SNAP funds remain accessible for nine months from the date of last use.
