Six Mile Fire continues to burn in rugged terrain near Socorro

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Fire managers say firefighters will continue to use direct extinguishment and indirect confinement strategies to put out the Six Mile Fire.

Helicopters and Very Large Airtankers (VLAs), as managers call them, will be used Sunday to safely engage the fire. Helicopters used bucket drops while VLAs “strategically laid retardant lines” to help check the fire.

The fire is burning in very rugged terrain with limited access. It has grown to around 150 acres but isn’t a threat to any communities. The cause is undetermined.

Overnight cooler temperatures slowed fire growth. The northwest corner had more activity. You may see some smoke along U.S. Highway 60 from Socorro west, as well from Interstate 25.

Resources, according to NM Fire Info: 3 Interagency Hotshot Crews, 2 Fire Modules, Air Attack, 2 Type 3 Helicopters, 2 Type 1 Helicopter and several Large Air tankers.
