Sex offender registry awaits former Atherton teacher after jail sentence

FLINT, MI – Jerry Cutting, the former Atherton teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old student, has been sentenced to one year in jail.

Cutting, 57, pleaded no contest to one count of second degree criminal sexual conduct in June. He was originally charged with six counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct.

Cutting was sentenced on Sept. 29 by Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Chris B. Christenson.

He will serve 12 months in jail with credit for five days served. Cutting will then serve 36 months of probation and register in Michigan’s public sex offender registry, according to court records.

A no contest plea means the defendant accepts a conviction and sentencing for a criminal charge without admitting guilt.

Three of the victim’s classmates approached the dean of students to report Cutting, Prosecutor David Leyton said in October 2022.

Investigators believe there were incidents that took place at Cutting’s home, at the school and at hotels in the area. He is represented by attorneys Frank Manley and Sara Coaster.

Cutting was a 30-year music teacher at the elementary and high school buildings. He also formerly served as a girls basketball coach and softball coach.
