Severe weather possible in Alabama on Friday

A cold front will bring a chance for severe weather to a wide area in Alabama on Friday.

Damaging winds and heavy rain will be possible with the strongest storms. The tornado risk is low but not zero, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms could work their way into north Alabama starting on Friday and could last into early Saturday morning.

The weather service thinks the storms will likely be on a weakening trend as they enter Alabama, but a strong storm or two will still be possible.

Showers will be possible as early as Friday afternoon, but the best chances for rain won’t arrive until Friday evening.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 2 out of 5 (slight) risk for severe weather for a small portion of north Alabama for Friday, including the Shoals area and Athens.

A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.

The rest of north Alabama and most of central Alabama have a Level 1 out of 5 (marginal) risk, which means isolated severe storms will be possible.

There is no severe weather risk for south Alabama, but rain and a storm or two will also be possible there.

The weather service noted that the better dynamics for severe weather will be north of Alabama, but if better instability were to materialize then the threat for storms could increase. That scenario didn’t appear as likely as of Wednesday.

The weather service also warned that the coldest air of the fall will follow the front and settle in over Alabama on Sunday through the first part of next week.

A widespread freeze, the first of the fall, will be possible for north and parts of central Alabama during that time.

Here is more from the weather service:
