Wyoming’s Senate Majority Whip, John Barrasso, was on the floor of the U.S. Senate yesterday speaking about his No Licenses for Illegal Drivers or Truckers Act bill. The bill is co-sponsored by fellow Wyomingite Senator Cynthia Lummis and Texas Republican Senator John Cornyn.
The bill would require states to verify a person’s legal status before issuing a driver’s license, commercial driver’s license, or government identification card, and that states that fail to comply could lose federal highway funding.
In the address to the Senate, Barrasso said many of the illegal immigrants who have flooded into the U.S. can’t speak English and cannot read road signs. Wyoming has encountered many cases since October of last year, in which illegal immigrants have been arrested for operating commercial vehicles.
Senator Barrasso says it’s time for all states and D.C. to get on board with safety.
While Wyoming already prohibits illegal immigrants from getting driver’s licenses, 19 states and the District of Columbia continue to issue personal and commercial driver’s licenses without verifying legal status. My legislation will ensure states follow the law and prioritize public safety.
Too many innocent Americans have faced tragic consequences due to the actions of illegal immigrants and sanctuary states. In recent months, there have been several incidents of illegal immigrant commercial truck drivers causing serious and sometimes deadly road accidents, including in California, Indiana, and Florida. The No Licenses for Illegal Drivers or Truckers Act will help prevent these tragedies and stand up for the safety and security of law-abiding American citizens.
