SDSU knocks off USD in five sets to sweep season series

BROOKINGS, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota State defeated South Dakota in a five-set thriller inside First Bank & Trust Arena Saturday night to improve to 12-0 in Summit League play.

The Coyotes won the first set 25-23. The Jackrabbits took the next two 25-13 and 25-22. The Yotes forced a fifth set with a 25-19 win in the fourth. The Jacks claimed the decisive set 15-8.

State hit .276 for the match, including a blistering .565 in the second. USD hit .152 for the match, highlighted by .308 in the fourth.

SDSU’s Sylvie Zgonc posted a match-high 24 kills and 11 digs for a .327 hitting percentage. Hannah Klein was also in double figures with 13 kills. Martin Rylee registered 44 assists and 11 digs.

USD was led by four players with double-digit kills. Ava Ball scored a team-high 17 kills. Samantha Laird added 12. Audrey Nelson and Morgan Bode contributed 10 kills apiece.

The Jacks are set to visit NDSU on Thursday. The Coyotes have a date with Omaha at home on Thursday.
