Ryan Shugars struck out nine and allowed just three hits over five innings as Scarborough tamed Massabesic 9-2 in a Class A South baseball matchup Thursday in Scarborough.
At the plate, Shugars tripled, drove in a run and scored a run. Leadoff hitter Finn Coburn had two hits, two runs and two RBI for the Red Storm (9-4-1), Kayson Cyr also recorded two hits and two runs, and Kaiden Carrell doubled and drove in a run.
Both teams are contending for a top-four seed and a first-round bye in the Class A South baseball playoffs. Scarborough is fifth in the Heal point standings and Massabesic (9-5) is sixth.
Parker Soule-Parent fanned eight batters in four innings for Massabesic. He also had one of Massabesic’s five hits.
FALMOUTH 10, WINDHAM 0: Jacoby Porter was 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBI, and the Navigators (9-5) beat the Eagles (2-12) in a five-inning game at Falmouth.
Caden Berry and Ryan Harder added two hits apiece. Berry drove in two runs, and Cooper Bucci scored twice.
Charlie Engle pitched a three-hitter with three strikeouts and three walks.
Michael Redlon got two of Windham’s three hits.
NOBLE 8, PORTLAND 5: Caiden Barnes tied the game with an RBI double in the fourth inning, Carl Gregoire followed with a two-run single, and the Knights (7-6-1) tacked on five runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Bulldogs (0-14) at Hadlock Field in Portland.
Travis Cole highlighted the sixth-inning outburst with a two-run single.
Wesley Turnbull, a junior left-hander, struck out seven and didn’t allow an earned run in his six innings on the mound. He gave up four hits and walked none.
Jacob Johnson, Aiden Eisenhart and Tommy Chase all had two hits for Portland, which scored four runs in the seventh.
GORHAM 9, THORNTON ACADEMY 1: Miles Brenner collected three hits and five RBI as the Rams (13-1) defeated the Golden Trojans (11-3) in Gorham.
Brenner paced the offense with a two-run triple, a two-run single and a sacrifice fly.
Hunter Finck pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win. He struck out six, allowed six hits and walked none.
Carter Moody paced Thornton with three hits.
SOFTBALL
BONNY EAGLE 11, THORNTON ACADEMY 2: Leah Storey and Madison Weeks both scored three runs at the top of the lineup for the Scots (12-2) in a win over the Golden Trojans (4-11) in Saco.
Reese Bryant and Lealea Cabading both drove in two runs, and everyone in Bonny Eagle’s starting lineup had at least one hit.
Theresa Eng was 2 for 3 for Thornton, including a two-runs single in the first inning. Lily Whitehurst and Bristol Dudley also finished with two hits.
WESTBROOK 12, BIDDEFORD 7: Leadoff batter Emma Clukey was 2 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored as the Blue Blazes (11-3) beat the Tigers (7-8) in Biddeford.
Emma Boulette added two hits, including a double, and three RBI, while Elyse Broad had a double, scored a run and drove in two. Faith Stoddard notched three hits.
Mariah Villandry had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for Biddeford. Corinna Ramunno also produced two hits.
WINDHAM 12, SOUTH PORTLAND 6: Yani Kostopolous was 2 for 2 with a three-run homer and five RBI, leading the Eagles (10-4) past the Red Riots (9-5) in Windham.
Addie Caiazzo went 3 for 3 and surpassed 100 hits in her career for Windham. She also scored three times and drove in a run.
South Portland’s Lucy Wetzel had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two. Jillian Edgar added a double, two singles and two RBI.
MASSABESIC 12, KENNEBUNK 9: Ella Gerrish was 4 for 4 with a home run, a double, four RBI and two runs scored to lead the Mustangs (6-9) past the Rams (4-11) in Waterboro.
Ada Tassinari went 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Kennadi Graffam added two hits, Devenney Brickett had a double and scored three times, and Zoye Holbrook also doubled.
Chloe Rousselle and Britney Roberts both recorded four hits and Ashley Sanderson had three for Kennebunk. Rousselle drove in two runs.
EDWARD LITTLE 20, BRUNSWICK 2: Emily Poulin’s grand slam highlighted a 16-hit attack for the Red Eddies (10-5) in a five-inning win over the Dragons (0-14)
in Brunswick.
Chloe LeBlanc recorded another home run for Edward Little, along with a double, a single and three RBI. Ellie Porter drove in four runs on two hits, while Lauren Bolduc had three hits, including a double, and an RBI.
Poulin, Elizabeth Galway (double, three runs) and Allie Michaud (three runs) contributed two hits apiece.
LeBlanc also was the winning pitcher. She struck out nine and allowed five hits.
Brunswick’s Laiken Augustine homered and drove in two runs, and Kenzie Phillips finished with two hits.
LACROSSE
YARMOUTH 15, FREEPORT 4: Celia Zinman scored five goals, Vivienne Corriveau added three, and the Clippers (7-4) handled the Falcons (6-7) in Freeport.
Metta Lindsay finished with two goals, while Eleanor Weyenberg, Karoline Tempkins, Emery Sharp, Sydni Nueslein and Maya Nasveschuk also scored for Yarmouth.
Ella Tracy, Gwen Dunham, Sophie Simard and Keeley Furtney scored for Freeport.
