A 30-year-old San Francisco man was arrested on suspicion of a hit-and-run crash that killed one pedestrian in the city’s South of Market neighborhood earlier this week.
The crash occurred Monday afternoon near Mission Street and South Van Ness Avenue, the San Francisco Police Department said in a news release. When officers arrived on the scene just before 3:30 p.m., they found a struck pedestrian, who was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver who allegedly hit the pedestrian had left the scene, police said. According to KGO-TV, there were other people in the car, including a baby.
Authorities eventually found the driver and pulled him over near Portero Avenue and 18th Street, police said. He was arrested and booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of homicide and felony hit-and-run.
Police have not released additional details about the crash, but video from a surveillance camera circulating on Reddit shows a pedestrian walking around the side of a vehicle that matched the type of car the suspect was allegedly driving. As soon as the pedestrian walked in front of the car, the driver accelerated and ran them over, the video shows.
Allison Maxie, a spokesperson for SFPD, told SFGATE that police are not confirming any photo or video evidence at this time. Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call the police department at 415-575-4444 or text TIP411 to the tipline.
