Albuquerque city leaders celebrated phase one of the San Antonio Oxbow Bluffs, turning a once-proposed housing site into protected public open space.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque city leaders celebrated phase one of the San Antonio Oxbow Bluffs, turning a once-proposed housing site into protected public open space.
The city marked the milestone in northwest Albuquerque as the space opened with a natural walking trail loop, including a path for people with disabilities.
The space also now includes an outdoor classroom and gathering area with benches and picnic tables.
“We have everybody pulling together, across generations for the same purpose, because we love this place and we want to protect it,” said Rex Funk, former superintendent of Open Space Lands.
Funk joined the celebration as city leaders said the property will remain protected from development.
Crews are also working with Bosque School and St. Pius High School to clean up the oxbow marsh.
