Safety during Halloween in Waikiki

WAIKIKI, Oahu (KHON2) — Halloween is coming up in just four days, and one area that always gets a lot of excitement on the big night is Waikiki.

But with lots of foot traffic, it won’t only be from costume wearers and party goers, but there will also be increased security and patrols to ensure that everyone has a fun and safe holiday.

“There’ll be thousands of people on the street, but our biggest priority that night is to make sure people are having fun – but also the safety side,” said Trevor Abarzua, President of Waikiki Business Improvement District. “So our organization will have extra Aloha Ambassadors out, extra safety ambassadors out, and then we’re partnering with HPD as well, and there’ll be tons of police officers on the street.”

“We will be on Kalakaua Avenue on the Mauka side, and after about Lewers, you’ll see one lane blocked for some police vehicles,” said Major Bradon Ogata of the Honolulu Police Department. “We will have a lot of police on foot, so you’ll see that around too, and those vehicles basically will be there just to basically serve the officers in the area should they encounter anything.”

For the first time in years, this Halloween is going to fall on a Friday, which could mean that the number of people out on the streets could be as high as ever.

But people roaming won’t just be there to enforce the rules, they’ll also be there to lend a hand or point you in the right direction for where best to go during the hectic night.

“We have our Aloha Ambassadors who are an extra hospitality presence,” said Abarzua. “They’ll be able to tell you where all the bars are, they’ll be able to give you opinions on where to go to get a good dinner or to have a drink.”

While the scene is sure to be as exciting and lively as ever, it’s also important to remember general safety reminders like any other night.

“We do have specials all day for drinks and some pupus as well,” said Marissa Komomua, General Manager of Giovanni Pastrami, “But everyone please be safe and make sure they have a D.D. as well. If not, we can always call a cab for you.”

“For Waikiki, please, please, please be careful as you’re walking around,” said Major Ogata on reminders to the public. “A lot of times, people are enjoying their groups that they’re in, maybe they’re talking, they might not be paying attention to the vehicles that are moving around, it’s very congested. So please be safe.”
